The RMIWA Rescue Committee works with animal shelters and individual owners who must re-home their Irish Wolfhounds due to various life changing events including illness, job loss, moving, and death. The ages of the IWs needing placement range from youngsters to veterans; however, most rescues are over 1 year old.

The RMIWA Rescue Committee re-homes an average of 5-10 IWs per year. Although the RMIWA does not place IW mixes directly, we do refer interested adopters to local animal shelters and to individuals who have IW mixes to place. We concentrate our placements in the Rocky Mountain region. If you are interested in adopting an Irish Wolfhound outside of the Rocky Mountain states, please contact the Irish Wolfhound Club of America Rescue at http://www.iwclubofamerica.org/rescue.htm.

ADOPTION INFORMATION

Occasionally, the RMIWA Rescue Committee is given very little notice to re-home an IW; therefore, if you would like to be considered for an adoption, it is important to take a few minutes now to complete our adoption questionnaire and return it to us. However please be aware, even if you complete an adoption questionnaire, you may not hear from us for weeks or months about an available hound.

Please read the following guidelines that the RMIWA Rescue uses to approve acceptable homes before completing the adoption questionnaire.

  • Number of animals housed in the adopter's residence must comply with city, county and state laws and home owner association by-laws and covenants.
  • A structurally fenced yard is required. “Invisible fences" are not suitable for an adopted Irish Wolfhound.
  • The age of resident children will be considered. An adopted giant breed dog may not be suitable for families with children under 5 years old.
  • Adopter must be 21 years of age.
  • A home visit and veterinary and personal reference checks will be made before placement.
  • Renters must provide written confirmation from their landlord that an IW will be acceptable in the home.

The RMIWA Rescue Committee does not practice "first come-first serve" when placing Irish Wolfhounds in new homes. Instead, through the information provided on the Adoption Questionnaires, we attempt to match the rescue IW with the home that will best met his needs and background.

Adoption fees vary and are based on the costs incurred in transportation, spay/neuter expenses and other medical expenses. Adoption fees may be reduced for older dogs, or dogs with known illness.

If you are interested in adopting an Irish Wolfhound, please download and complete the adoption questionnaire and mail it to the rescue coordinator listed on the application. Due to our volunteer's schedules you may wait a week for a response on general inquiries.
