Irish Wolfhound Specialty Show

The RMIWA holds an Irish Wolfhound Specialty Show annually. This show is held on the Friday prior to Labor Day in Colorado. Approximately 100 Irish Wolfhounds compete in obedience, breed and lure coursing competition. Booths of educational materials, Irish Wolfhound collectibles, club T-shirts and a raffle are usually present.

Lure Coursing

Lure Coursing is a field trial competition that tests the athletic and hunting abilities of sighthounds. The AKC recognized breeds eligible to compete in lure coursing are: Afghan Hounds, Basenjis, Borzois, Greyhounds, Ibizan Hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Pharaoh Hounds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, Whippets. Additional breeds that may enter ASFA lure coursing are Azawakhs, Chart Polskis, Cirneco dell'Etnas, Galgo Espanols, Magyar Agars, Peruvian Inca Orchids, and Sloughis. A white or black plastic bag is tied to a string on a motorized continuous loop machine and laid out on a course of 600 or more yards in an open field. Hounds are run in trios and scored by judges. The hounds are judged on speed, follow, enthusiasm, endurance and agility. Field Championships and other coursing titles can be earned from either the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) or the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The RMIWA and other area clubs hold several lure coursing trials each year from March to December in the Colorado area. See the Calendar page for trial dates and locations. Contact Tracey Luty for questions.
